Training at Ammerdown
Training at Ammerdown with Laochin Gundogs January 15th /16th
We had a full course again 8 dogs in all. 4 G.S.P’s, 2 H.V’s and 2 W.H.V’s. The weather on the 15th was not good as we had about 6 to 10 inches of snow with easterly winds, not good for pointing dogs .
We started out on old stubble fields(not that you would know it was stubble) headed to a wood where we could see birds running down the hedge rows towards the wood. The guns were waiting for the first point of the day which wasn’t long in coming .
A young G.S.P pointed and held it nicely, flushed on command and then retrieved the bird to hand. Next up was a WHV which also had birds on her beat, the guns were shooting well and shot 3 pheasants off this dog of which she retrieved 2 and another WHV came in for the last retrieve. The next 2 dogs had blank runs, then a G.S.P had a point on a rabbit which was shot and retrieved. Next up was a very young G.S.P which did hunt well and found game. It did very well as it was the first time this dog had been on live game .
As the day went on the conditions got better, all dogs had found and pointed game. In all on the 1st day we had 19 pheasants, 4 woodcock, 6 pigeon, 1 hare and a rabbit .
The next day we were over the owl nest side of the shoot, it had rained most of the night and a lot of the snow had gone, the same dogs running as the 1st day. All the dogs worked better and we had a good bag again 23 pheasants, 1partridge, 4 woodcock, 1 snipe, 1 hare and 5 pigeons .
I would like to thank Mr Andy Cullen for coming down from
Also thanks to Mr Greg Knight of Rural Shots for taking photos on the day .
